The second-generation immigrant community in America is positioned on a bridge crossing two identities. As an Asian-American whose parents were born in Tawain, I represent my Asian culture in America, but when I visit Asia, I am considered The American cousin.
I have solid Taiwanese roots and can speak and understand Mandarin, honor important cultural traditions, and have peers that share the same experience. Yet, I still find myself living the in-between, in a polyphonic space where what I eat, how I speak, and how I dress are all derived from these two identities.
The American Cousin explores the duality of the second-generation identity, and through a personal lens, brings to light daily encounters that many are familiar with.
